Lesson 6: Asking and Answering Questions in Daily Conversations

Instructor: “Hello and welcome back to Spoken English for Daily Use! In this lesson, we will learn how to ask and answer simple questions in daily conversations. Knowing how to ask questions is very important when talking to people. Let’s get started!”

Part 1: Common Question Types

Instructor: “There are two main types of questions in English:

🔹 WH-questions – These start with words like What, When, Where, Who, Why, and How. 🔹 Yes/No questions – These questions start with Do, Does, Is, Are, or Can.”

“Let’s look at some examples!”

Part 2: WH-Questions (Asking for Information)

Instructor: “WH-questions help us get information. Here are some common examples:

❓ What do you do? (I am a student.) ❓ Where do you live? (I live in Colombo.) ❓ When do you wake up? (I wake up at 6 AM.) ❓ Who is your best friend? (My best friend is Sam.) ❓ Why are you late? (I missed the bus.) ❓ How do you go to work? (I take the bus.)

When you hear a WH-question, listen for the key word to understand what information is needed.”

Part 3: Yes/No Questions (Simple Answers)

🔹 Do you like tea? – Yes, I do. / No, I don’t. 🔹 Do you speak English? – Yes, I do. / No, I don’t. 🔹 Does she work here? – Yes, she does. / No, she doesn’t. 🔹 Is he your brother? – Yes, he is. / No, he isn’t. 🔹 Are they coming today? – Yes, they are. / No, they aren’t. 🔹 Can you help me? – Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.

Now, let’s practice making and answering questions!”

Part 4: Conversation Practice (Dialogue Examples)

🗣 Dialogue 1: Meeting Someone New 🔹 A: Hi! What’s your name? 🔹 B: My name is Lisa. What about you? 🔹 A: I’m John. Nice to meet you! 🔹 B: Nice to meet you too!

🗣 Dialogue 2: Asking About Work or Study 🔹 A: What do you do? 🔹 B: I am a teacher. And you? 🔹 A: I work in a bank.

🗣 Dialogue 3: Asking About Daily Routine 🔹 A: When do you wake up? 🔹 B: I wake up at 6 AM. How about you? 🔹 A: I wake up at 7 AM.
